Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Knocked-out permanent teeth require immediate attention. If possible, rinse the tooth gently without touching the root, place it back in the socket, or keep it moist in milk or saliva while getting to our office. The faster we can address a knocked-out tooth, the better the chance of saving it.

Chipped or broken teeth are common in active children. Even if the damage seems minor, it’s important to have your child examined. Cracks that aren’t visible can lead to infection or further damage if left untreated. We assess the extent of the injury and provide appropriate repair to restore both function and appearance.

Handling Toothaches and Pain

Severe toothaches in children can indicate various issues, from cavities to infections. Never ignore persistent dental pain, as it typically signals a problem requiring professional attention. We examine your child thoroughly to identify the source of pain and provide relief through appropriate treatment.

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to clean the area around the painful tooth.
  • Check for any food particles stuck between teeth and gently remove them with floss if possible.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling before your appointment.

What to Expect During Emergency Treatment

When you arrive for emergency care, our team works quickly to assess your child’s condition and provide relief. We explain each step of the treatment in age-appropriate language, helping your child feel more comfortable during a stressful situation. Our priority is addressing pain and stabilizing the injury while keeping your child as calm as possible.

  • Immediate assessment to determine the extent of the injury or problem.
  • Pain management to ensure your child is comfortable during treatment.
  • Appropriate treatment based on the specific emergency, from temporary repairs to complete restoration.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?

Time is critical when a permanent tooth is knocked out. Rinse the tooth gently with water without touching the root, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or holding it in your cheek. Contact our office immediately for an emergency appointment. The sooner we can see your child (ideally within 30 minutes), the better chance we have of saving the tooth.

You should contact us right away if your child experiences severe tooth pain, knocked-out or loose teeth, broken or chipped teeth, injuries to the lips or tongue with heavy bleeding, swelling in the mouth or jaw, or objects stuck between teeth that can’t be removed with floss. We offer same-day emergency appointments and can provide guidance over the phone to help you manage the situation until you arrive at our office.

Rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water to help reduce inflammation. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek near the affected area to minimize swelling and numb the pain. You may give age-appropriate doses of over-the-counter pain medication following package directions. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums, as this can burn the tissue. Contact our office as soon as possible so we can schedule an emergency visit and provide professional care.
